I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Oregon, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Washington state, and a Certified Sex Therapist through the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT). My clinical career has been dedicated to working with clients who experience barriers to care and marginalization (ableism, transphobia, homophobia, erotophobia, classism, racism, saneism, etc.).
In 2019, I earned my Master of Arts degree (M.A.) in Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling through the CACREP-accredited Graduate School of Counseling at George Fox University. I completed master’s coursework, with training in the following topics: Individual, Couples, Group and Family Counseling; Diagnosis and Treatment; Human Sexuality; Career Counseling; Human Growth & Development; Addiction Counseling; Multicultural Counseling and Play Therapy. My clinical practice continues to expand, supported by completing 650 hours of continuing education over the past 7 years.
Since 2022, I have served as an adjunct professor at Lewis & Clark College. I have completed over 900 hours of graduate-level instruction across the following courses: Group Counseling with Adults, Couples Therapy, Child & Family Counseling, Theory & Philosophy of Counseling, Addictions, Counseling and Interventions with Adults, Diagnosis of Mental & Emotional Disorders, and Advanced Sex Therapy. Additionally, I have been providing specialized training to pre-licensed and licensed clinicians in Oregon and Washington state since 2019.
Graduate supervision is primarily centered around supervisors facilitating student interns' identifying and defining their scope of competence and ethical responsibilities, building interdependence, learning structured theory, and practicing theory and skills application. As a systems-trained clinician, Renee can supervise clinical mental health and marriage + family therapy students in Oregon.
Supervision of registered associates is primarily centered on supporting clinician autonomy and fostering professional identity, supporting compliance with state laws, licensing regulations, and documentation standards, and refining clinical responsibilities (assessment, diagnosis, and interventions, ethical dilemmas, etc.). As a systems-trained clinician, Renee can supervise associates working toward LMFT and LPC licensure in Oregon.
My approach to supervision is integrative—joining together theoretical and developmental models of supervision. My supervisory approach is feminist and humanistic in theoretical nature. I believe in examining how power dynamics (both in society and within the therapeutic dyad) affect the clinical process. In supervision, I strive to give maximum voice to the supervisee and prefer collaborating rather than directing.
The Integrated Developmental Model approaches clinical supervision with structured assumptions for supervisee growth across three primary levels of expertise, based on supervisee experience level. It assesses competence based on three core structures: Motivation, autonomy, and self- and other-awareness. The IDM gives both the supervisor and supervisee a framework for development and developmental processes.
Feminist clinical supervision is grounded in feminist therapy principles, focusing on the empowerment of the supervisee, the creation of an egalitarian supervisory relationship, and the acknowledgment of the personal as political. Feminist supervision is a commitment to the infusion of social justice principles into one’s work, especially as they relate to social identities, power/privilege and marginalization.
The systems approach to supervision contains interconnecting dimensions that create a roadmap that supervisors can use to navigate supervision. Factors of influence within supervision include: The relationship; the supervisor and supervisee; contextual dimensions; and process dimensions.
I provide direct mental health services to individuals, families and relationship-systems. I provide both long-term and short-term services depending on the needs of the client(s). I primarily meet with clients weekly or bi-weekly.
My specialties in clinical practice include the following: Sex Therapy; Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD); Trauma Disorders; Anxiety Disorders; Gender Identity Exploration; Sexual Identity Exploration; Kink Exploration; Disordered Eating + Body Image Issues; Chronic Illness + Chronic Pain; Familial Conflict; Relationship Conflict ; Grief + Loss; and Perinatal Mental Health.
I am qualified to supervise clinicians that work with these topics and utilize most modalities covered under these approaches, as well as the most common therapeutic modalities used in practice today. However, some areas of practice are outside of my scope of competence, and I will not provide supervision in such cases (e.g., Somatic Experiencing®, mandated treatment, Forensic Evaluation, etc.).
Critical Race theory refers to collective critical views of how US macrosystems are inherently racist. Critical race theory rejects colorblindness and political neutrality and prioritizes dismantling white supremacy, which operates at the direct and persistent expense of communities of color. Queer theory focuses on unlearning conditioned beliefs and reimagining identity, wellness versus sickness, psycho- pathology, gender and sexuality.
Relational–Cultural therapy (RCT) is a form of therapy that emphasizes the importance and transformative power of our sense of self and our connection with others. RCT believes that humans naturally grow toward and through connection with others. RCT highlights the role our families, community and society play in forming our identities and beliefs about ourselves.
Attachment theory is a therapeutic perspective based on the role of attachment in our lives. Attachment is a deep, enduring bond that connects us to our loved ones another across time and space. We are believed to have attachment-styles based on the quality of our relationships with our caregivers as children.
Refers to a systemic approach that focuses on the relationships, communication patterns, and interpersonal dynamics within a family or group, rather than just the individual. It aims to change dysfunctional, symptom-promoting interactions by viewing issues as part of a larger, interconnected social system.
Emotionally-Focused therapy (EFT) is a form of therapy that focuses on the value of engaging in emotional experiencing in the present moment. EFT believes that a safe, clarifying and meaningful connective experience has the power to heal and transform our senses of self and intimate relationships.
Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB) explores the adaptability, resilience and transformative power of our brains. IPNB focuses on our conscious mind, our relationships and our embodied brains. Our brains continue to grow and adapt across the lifespan, as they are capable of creating new neural pathways, or new ways of thinking and relating in our lives.
Mindfulness-based practices give us a chance to focus our attention on the present moment. When we engage in mindfulness, we experience our senses, thoughts, feelings and emotions, physical sensations, and behavior in a way curious, compassionate and nonjudgmental way.
Somatic Therapies encompasses a group of therapies that view healing as a "bottom-up" approach that promotes mind-body connection. Somatic therapies connect with trauma-focused treatment — treatment that focuses on addressing historical-based trauma as well as active trauma symptoms.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a form of therapy that focuses on the relationship between our thoughts, emotions, and actions. CBT can be a powerful tool that helps us to identify and transform potential disempowering beliefs we hold about ourselves and others that may be negatively impacting our quality of life.
I offer meet-and-greets free of charge to folks interested in working with me. This gives us the opportunity to learn more about one another and gauge whether it feels like a good fit to move forward in supervision.
